Learning the Ropes Behind the Counter

One of the first challenges of the day was mastering the coffee machine.

As someone whose coffee order has always been a simple Americano, the world of cappuccinos, mochas, lattes and pumpkin lattes felt a little daunting. Thankfully, with some expert coaching from Jim, Tracey was soon learning the differences between the drinks and putting her new skills into practice.

By the end of the day, she had successfully made cappuccinos, mochas, lattes, pumpkin lattes and even a pot of tea.

There was plenty more to learn beyond coffee too. From helping Nathan load the commercial dishwasher to serving customers and chatting with visitors, every task gave a new insight into the work that keeps the café running smoothly.

One of the highlights came when Karrone arrived and ordered a pumpkin latte. After carefully preparing the drink, Tracey was delighted when Karrone declared it “perfect”.

“High praise indeed!”

The day also provided opportunities to catch up with familiar faces, meet local artist Collette and, of course, welcome several four-legged visitors whose dog treats may have proved to be one of Tracey’s favourite responsibilities.

Tracey Said:

“People spoke about friendship, belonging, comfort and community. They described it as a place where they can be themselves.”

The Hub

More Than a Cafe

As the day went on, one message became clear.

The Heart of the Hub Café means far more to people than simply somewhere to buy food and drink.

Regular customers spoke passionately about the welcoming atmosphere created by the team. Others talked about the friendships they had formed, the sense of belonging they feel and the comfort of having a place where everyone is welcomed and valued.

“No fewer than five people told me how much the café means to them. Not because of the coffee or the food, although those are obviously important, but because it offers something much deeper.”

People spoke about friendship, community and connection. They described the café as a place where they can be themselves.

Reflecting on the experience, Tracey said:

“As CEO, we spend a lot of time talking about strategy, growth, quality and sustainability. All of those things matter. But today was a wonderful reminder that at the heart of everything we do are people and relationships.”

While the day began with learning how to make a pumpkin latte, it ended with something far more valuable: a renewed appreciation of the incredible team, volunteers, customers and community who make the Heart of the Hub Café such a special place.

And for the record, if anyone needs a pumpkin latte in future, Tracey now comes highly recommended by Karrone.
